EP Media is so much more than a video production program at East Pennsboro Area Middle and High Schools.
EP Media is made up of 5th – 12th grade student-volunteers who work together for the love of creating something great to promote the ideas of others.
Specifically, these students become
Empowered Learners: Students articulate and set personal learning goals, develop strategies leveraging technology to achieve them and reflect on the learning process itself to improve learning outcomes.
Creative Communicators: Students create original works or responsibly repurpose or remix digital resources into new creations.
Digital Citizens: Students demonstrate an understanding of and respect for the rights and obligations of using and sharing intellectual property.
Students determine what areas and to what degree of expertise they need while communicating with other learners as a part of a team. As they tackle complex logistical and technological problems, they create systems to solve them. Student-created methods that work are taught by the student-masters to apprentices. Students learn that with increased knowledge, reputation of character, and competency comes more influence and creative freedom.
By becoming creators themselves, students inherently learn the value of intellectual property. The character-building components of the program extend seamlessly into digital arenas.
The whole program aims to achieve student creativity done with and for others. In a digital landscape rife with self-centered YouTubers, our students learn the deeper joy and dignity experienced when the camera is turned around toward others.
EP Media is a competency-based learning program. This means that students progress through learning experiences based on their own ability to reach certain benchmarks or by earning credentials. It doesn’t matter what grade a student is in, what courses a student may or may not have taken, or how long it takes to reach the goal. This enables an authentic learning experience that mimics the real world, where the desire to accomplish great work is the goal, not grades on a report card. Students will be able to articulate and show evidence of the skills they have acquired through this program – skills that will help them in so many areas of life beyond video production.
EP Media believes that by providing students with premium resources, students will become inspired and empowered to create premium content. For this reason, EP Media strives to provide students with professional-grade computers, software, cameras, lenses, lights, audio gear, and even a drone.
Students who are interested in joining EP Media should email Mr. Hanson directly at EHanson@epasd.org. Students can meet as little or often as they like, but with greater commitment comes greater opportunities for leadership and creative control.
