McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act

Children and Youth Experiencing Homelessness

Under the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act, schools must identity children and youth in homeless situations and provide appropriate services, including immediate enrollment in school even when the students lack paperwork normally required for enrollment.  The goal of the federal law, McKinney-Vento, is to assure continuity of education despite circumstances that may result in a family experiencing homelessness.

Homeless students are defined as individuals lacking a fixed, regular, and adequate nighttime residence.  If a student or parent believes they meet these conditions, they should contact their building principal, school counselor or the homeless liaison.

For more information or to contact the homeless liaison, please see the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act on the EPASD website at https://www.epasd.org/departments/students/homeless-information/.  Also, see District Policy No. 251 – Homeless Students at https://go.boarddocs.com/pa/epns/Board.nsf/Public.
