Mr. Maynard Sheaffer, Class of 1940.
For more than 50 years, Maynard L. Sheaffer ran his own successful building business in Enola. He served as the first building inspector for East Pennsboro Township. In addition to building hundreds of quality homes and apartments, he built Sheaffer’s Field, Central PA’s first lighted ball field that is now home to the East Pennsboro Youth Athletic League.
In addition to bettering the community through his many building projects and business endeavors, Mr. Sheaffer served as a member of the East Pennsboro School District Authority in the 1970’s which oversaw the construction of the Middle School. Mr. Sheaffer also was a life-long supporter of East Pennsboro athletics on both the varsity and recreational levels. Over the years, generations of young athletes have played football, baseball and softball at Sheaffer Field.
Mr. Sheaffer built his business, literally, from the ground up, completely on his own. He had an interest in carpentry from an early age. In high school, he actually failed his shop class. His assignment was to make bookends. Instead, he built a complete set of kitchen cabinets for his mother. The teacher at the time apologized but said he had to give him a failing grade because he did not complete the assignment.
Throughout his years in business, he often mentored young builders, several of whom eventually went on to run successful businesses of their own. And he often lent out his shop and facilities for school projects.
