    The Research Process: The Big6

(Younger students may use this link to The Super 3)

Step 1: Task Definition: What needs to be done?

In this step you need to think about what you want to know or about the assignment that your teacher has given you.

    Ask yourself these questions:

    • What do I need to do?
    • What do I need to find out?

Step 2 : Information Seeking Strategies: What resources can I use?

In this step you need to ask yourself these questions:

    • What kinds of BOOKS could I use? (Don't forget non-fiction books, encyclopedias, dictionaries and atlases.)
    • Are there any ONLINE DATABASES I could use to find answers to my questions?
    • Are there OTHER RESOURCES I could use?
Step 3: Location and Access: Where can I find these resources?
Use the ONLINE CATALOG (OPAC) to find books in the library, including electronic books.

Use our IMPORTANT LINKS page to get to POWER Library, eLibrary, and Grolier Online, and Explore PA History. (Click here to go to those resources.)

Step 4: Use of Information: What can I use from these resources?

Now the real work begins. You must begin to look for information that answers the questions that you are looking for.

    • What do I need to do?
    • What do I need to find out?
Now take notes on all the information you find that helps you answer your questions.
    Use these note-taking worksheet:
Don't forget to write down where you found your information in your bibliography.

Step 5: Synthesis: What can I make to finish the job?
    Consider these questions:
    • How am I going to report my information to my teacher and my class?
    • What do I need to have or do to show that I have completed the assignment?
Step 6: Evaluation: How will I know I did my job well?

    Consider these questions:
    • Did I do my best job?
    • Is my project free of mistakes?
    • Is it easy for others to read and understand?
(Your teacher will probably have a rubric to help you evaluate your project.)
